A: GSM handsets must meet the following criteria: GSM 1900 megahertz (MHz). Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Approved. The handset is not locked to another carrier’s network Will Cable & Wireless be selling these handsets? A: Yes. These phones can be purchased from our Authorized Dealers or directly from your local Cable & Wireless store. Will my TDMA handset work with the new GSM network? A: Your current TDMA handset will not work on the new GSM network, as they are two different technologies. The benefits and features of the new GSM system will not be available unless you have a compatible GSM handset. How can I tell if my current handset is TDMA or GSM? A: All GSM handsets use a SIM card, which is generally located beneath the battery. TDMA handsets do not. For more detailed advice, please call Cable & Wireless at 811. It may, however, require a visual inspection of the handset, so you may be asked to visit the Cable & Wireless store near you. What is a SIM card (SIM chip)? A: The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is the brain of your handset. The SIM card is approximately the size of a credit card. The SIM chip is removed from the card holder and inserted into the back of the handset. It’s about the size of a postage stamp, with embedded circuitry on one side. When inserted into a GSM handset, the SIM when activated by Cable & Wireless facilitates mobile service on a particular GSM network. The card holder contains confidential information for unlocking your handset if you forget your PIN. Please store it in a safe place. The SIM contains general information for your mobile phone service. It retains the features or services available to you as a subscriber, on a particular GSM network and stores information you programmed into your handset, like your phonebook. Having a SIM card makes it easy and convenient to change your handset. Do I have to purchase a SIM Card in addition to the handset? A: A SIM Card is included with bMobile or bBiz Cable & Wireless service plans. A SIM Card is also included in the bFree startup kit. Where do I find the mobile phone number on my SIM card? A: The phone number related to your SIM card is usually located on the packaging or materials received when obtaining your mobile service. The number printed directly on the SIM card is a SIM card number - NOT the phone number. A: A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a four-digit code stored on the SIM Card as a security mechanism which prevents unauthorized persons from using your GSM handset. It is recommended that you activate the PIN on your SIM card to prevent unauthorized usage. The default PIN is 0000, however, you should change this number for your protection. Please refer to your handset manual. A: The Personal Unblocking Key (PUK) is an eight-digit code that is required to unblock your phone when you have entered the incorrect PIN ten times. It is located on the back of the SIM cardholder. All phones have a different set of procedures for unblocking and you will need to consult the manual for your GSM mobile phone when this occurs. Should an incorrect PUK be entered ten times in a row, the SIM will be permanently disabled. You may need to purchase a new SIM if yours is disabled. What should I do if I receive an error code when I have inserted the SIM? A: The error message indicates that the SIM has been inserted incorrectly. Simply remove the SIM and when re-inserting ensure that the embedded circuitry is placed face down and that the SIM is seated in line with the slot provided. Please refer to your handset manual. What is the difference between a Prepaid Card and a SIM card? A: A SIM card is the brain of your handset and a prepaid card is a means of applying airtime to your account. A prepaid (bFree) customer will use both types of cards. What will happen if the SIM is exposed to moisture? A: Exposure to any form of moisture may damage the circuit on the card making it useless. However, if your card is exposed to moisture, quickly remove it and wipe off the excess water and allow to air dry for a couple of minutes then re-insert. If your phone works normally, then your SIM card is OK. If not, you will need to replace it. Will my handset work when roaming? A: A SIM card is the brain of your handset and a prepaid card is a means of applying airtime to your account. A prepaid (bFree) customer will use both types of cards.
